A Simple Technique to Ease Anxiety and Overwhelm

Feeling overwhelmed, stressed or anxious? Try this simple technique to regain perspective and calm anxiety.

Find a quiet space where you can sit or lie down undisturbed for 5-10 minutes.
Close your eyes and picture yourself in your mind’s eye.
Really notice how you appear.
Look really closely so you can see your face and your expression.
Notice your body, how it looks and feels. Be aware of your emotions. Notice how they are expressed in your body.
Now, using your mind’s eye as a camera, zoom out slowly……
Notice your surroundings……
Zoom out further so you have a bird’s eye view of yourself and your immediate environment……
Continue to zoom out, keeping the vision of yourself as the main focus……
As though seeing your view from an aeroplane, your surroundings expanding to the village or town you are in……the wider part of the country……fields and other buildings…..
Zooming out so you can see the whole country and the surrounding land and water, still focussing on yourself in the centre…..
Continuing to pan out until you can see the whole of the Earth like a globe, suspended in space……
Zooming out so that even the Earth appears small and your camera is many millions of miles away, looking down on you in your original position on the Earth…..
Take a few moments here to enjoy this perspective, and the peace and tranquility that it brings.

Each one of us plays an important role in a much bigger picture than that which occupies our immediate environment. This does not reduce the significance of the problems we face but seeing ourselves from another perspective can help us to gain clarity and contentment.
