Why is Vitamin D so important?

It’s Vitamin D Awareness Week. We are busy putting up posters in the Claygate Complementary Health Clinic to raise awareness of this vital vitamin. Deficiency is becoming a serious issue with even cases of rickets being reported. It is thought that up to 70% of the population is deficient in Vitamin D and this is even more important in the Winter months. Over-reliance on suncream is thought to be one of the major culprits.

Why is it so important?

Vitamin D is crucial for the maintenance of bones, teeth, a healthy immune system and normal muscle function. We can get some from foods such as oily fish and eggs. However, we obtain most of it from our skin’s unprotected exposure to sunlight. While it is important to protect our skin from extreme amounts of the sun’s harmful rays, clothing and suncream block vitamin D production. It is especially important for those who spend a lot of time indoors, for those trying to conceive and for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

As the seasons are changing, I have just started my daily dose of Better You DLux Daily Vitamin D Oral Spray. Each spray contains 3000iu of vitamin D to ensure adequate levels. Sprays are great, as they enable the vitamin to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the mouth, rather than having to bypass the digestive system, as with tablets.

What else can you do?

Expose 20% of your body to the sun for 20 minutes each day. Easier said than done when stuck in an office on short, dark Winter days bu get out whenever you can on your breaks and top up your vitamin D.
